Gabby Hentemann, the reigning Big 12 Conference champion and NCAA Division 1 All-American in the 10,000 meters representing Oklahoma State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Cowgirls looking to repeat as women's team champions for the first time in program history at the Oct. 28 conference final in Lubbock, Texas. Hentemann, who placed seventh last year at the Big 12 championship meet to help Oklahoma State edge Iowa State by a 35-36 margin at the Greiner Family course in Stillwater, explains how significant it would be for both women's and men's teams to repeat and the support throughout the program. She also analyzes the pursuit for the women's lineup to earn a spot on the podium for the first time at the NCAA Division 1 Championships on Nov. 19 in Stillwater, and how meaningful it would be for both teams to be in title contention. Hentemann reflects on her 12th-place finish Sept. 24 in the 6-kilometer race at the Cowboy Jamboree and contributing to Oklahoma State earning a 69-88 victory against Northern Arizona. She also analyzes the impact that Natalie Cook, the national high school record holder in the 5,000 meters as well as the national cross country champion last year at both the RunningLane Championships and Eastbay National Championships, and fellow freshman Billah Jepkirui have had this fall on the Oklahoma State lineup, adding more depth to an already impressive roster. Hentemann revisits her decision to run the 10,000 for the first time in her career at the Big 12 final in May after contemplating taking a redshirt season, and how she built confidence with her victory and qualifying race at the West Regional in Arkansas to conclude her track season with a sixth-place finish in 33:18.04 in June at the NCAA Division 1 final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She shares her motivation to earn All-America honors in cross country after placing 250th in the March 2021 NCAA final in Stillwater, followed by finishing 61st at the Division 1 championship in November at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. Hentemann also speaks about her collaboration with Oklahoma State coach Dave Smith and how instrumental he has been in helping her improve and develop in Stillwater following an impressive high school career as a state champ at Grand Haven High in Michigan.
